NOBODY, I MEAN NOBODY, WANTS AN NFL LITE

by The Football Vets

Well, we couldn’t let Texas and Oklahoma get all the coverage. Now everyone is trying to get in the spotlight. USC, Clemson, and FSU are leading the rumor wave in trying to jump ship. Why? Are they not satisfied with their conferences? No, they aren’t satisfied. They see blood in the water. The sharks are circling. They are hungry for the money to be made. They think a conference of all the top teams leaves all the money on the table for them to grab.

To some degree the big teams are right. This is why they are tempted. However, the temptation to bite the apple always comes with a price. The new BIG ASP(BIG 10, ACC, SEC, PAC-12)-hole this new conference would create would effectively destroy college football and create an NFL minor league.

This minor league or NFL Lite will be promised the world but the bargain will be with the devil. The BIG ASP will soon find itself under the thumb of the NFL and on the outs with regional college football fans. Storied matchups killed for all time and NFL teams calling the best players out of the BIG ASP to fill rosters, whenever they feel the need. The hole left by the BIG ASP would suck the life out of the teams that do well but occasionally enter down periods. No, college football will not get better, it will contract a terminal illness.

There is no way the monopoly that is the NFL will allow a $2 Billion CFB Conference to siphon off the $16 Billion dollar industry they have created without sinking their fingers deep. The NFL will come with handouts to the new BIG ASP Conference first guaranteeing time and coordinating TV deals to ensure good revenue for the New NFL lite. Then they will promise to only recruit from the BIG ASP ensuring all the 5 Star recruits go to one of the BIG ASP Teams. Then they will sponsor the new BIG ASP Players. Then they will dictate where they go, and they will call them up when they want and move them between teams when they want.

DO YOU HONESTLY THINK this won’t happen? Say, Goodbye to the days of players staying all the way to the end and playing the best teams to the end. No! The NFL will slowly sink their claws into the BIG ASP. These claws will sink all the way to the heart of College football. If you think College Football Fans are complaining about Texas and Oklahoma you haven’t heard the cries of anguish yet.

Do you think the Ohio State Vs Michigan rivalry will matter as much when the OSU star quarterback is called up to Cincinnati to save their season? Do you think fans will be happy when Alabama's wide receiver is pulled to the Titans just before the College Football Playoff begins? You think that won’t happen? Go ask the USFL or the XFL or step out of Football for a second and look at the NBA G-League.

This won’t end well for college football if the BIG ASP Teams go down this path. The BIG ASP however won’t fair well in the long run either. They will enter the Bell of the Ball only to realize too late this was a dance with the devil all along. So, before they lose their glass slipper the now Power 4 need to play the tune on their own fiddle.

The SEC has a chance to grab the bulls by the horn and steer College Football into a new Golden Age. College Football must embrace the regional matches that evoke legendary games and conjure nostalgia for times long past. Only that, the super conferences should be super regional conferences that draw in the fans and fill 105,000 seat stadiums. Historic matchups that permeate college fight songs can once again come to life inspiring new love of the game. Let Americana fill the cool October night air well into the future all from the young lungs of College Football Fans.

So, for the sake of the storied past let’s not become the BIG ASP-hole the tear down the cherished edifice of an American Classic. Instead when the Devil comes down looking for a soul to steal, the New Power 4 Super Regional Conferences need to show them how its done. Give the Devil his due on Sunday and Monday but “Fire on the Mountain '' boys the rest of the week is open and if done right these super regional conferences will run Tuesday through Saturday.
